A Man Has to Eat! :: Warren Wiersbe

Read Matthew 4:104; Job 23:12

That’s right, a man
does have to eat! But if he is going to be a whole man, he must feed the soul as well as the body. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” The outward man is perishing, yet needs to be fed; so how much more the “inner man” that will live eternally (2 Co 4:16).

The average healthy adult male eats three good meals a day, and probably several snacks! Do you take time to feed on the spiritual nourishment in the Word of God? Job confessed that he valued the Word of God more than his necessary food! He would rather mediate on the Word of God than enjoy a steak dinner!

God’s Word is food for the inner man, and it sets before you daily a well-balanced diet. There is
the milk of the Word (And you never really outgrow milk) according to 1 Peter 2:2; and for the mature saint, there is the meat of the Word, the deeper truths about Christ’s present ministry as High Priest in heaven (Heb 5:6-14). Jesus compares the Word to bread in Matthew 4:4; and the psalmist writes, “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Ps 119:103). Milk—meat—bread—honey! What a spiritual menu the Lord has set before us for the inner man!

Of course, merely
reading your Bible will not nourish you, any more than reading a cookbook or a restaurant menu will feed a starving man. You must make the Word a part of your inner life by understanding it, meditating on it, memorizing it, and obeying it. Only then will you grow in the inner man and be strong because the Word is abiding in you (1 Jn 2:14).
